“KOTOHAYOKOZAWA” is a Tokyo-based fashion brand founded in 2015 by designer Kotoha Yokozawa.Centered on original cuts and textiles, the brand transforms the subtle sense of dissonance and insights found in everyday life into clothing. In this interview on Lula Japan Web, we discuss the history and future prospects of “KOTOHAYOKOZAWA”.

KOTOHAYOKOZAWA

-Please tell us what influenced you during your childhood and what inspired you to become a designer.

I lived with my maternal grandmother—who had run a dressmaking shop before I was born—in a two-generation home.
My grandmother’s room had a treadle sewing machine and torsos, and I was surrounded by those tools from a very young age.
Because she made my mother’s wedding dress and sewed clothes for herself, I naturally came to see clothes not just as something I ‘buy’, but also as something I ‘make myself’.

Also, starting in the early elementary school years, I really looked forward to reading ‘Pichile’ and ‘nicola’ every month, and I would reread them over and over again.
I still remember the order of the pages, and I think the influence of that time was enormous.
My decision to become a designer came from that same path.
I even wrote in my kindergarten memorial book that I would be a fashion designer.

-Is there a particular sense you prioritize when making clothes?

What matters most to me is whether it feels right for me.
During fittings, I have others try on the pieces, but I always make sure to try them on myself as well.
The ideal piece for me is something that looks good on everyone, is comfortable to wear, and is easy to care for.

「SOMEBODY KOTOHAYOKOZAWA」

-You currently offer different lines called “KOTOHAYOKOZAWA”, “TODO KOTOHAYOKOZAWA”, and “SOMEBODY KOTOHAYOKOZAWA”. Could you tell us about the background behind how your brand evolved into three separate lines?

I started with a brand named after my own name.
Ever since I launched the brand, I’d been making the lettuce-edge style T-shirts that would eventually become the cornerstone of “TODO KOTOHAYOKOZAWA”. They received a much better response than I’d imagined. I constantly repeated the cycle of making more once they sold out and delivering them to the store.
But before I knew it, that was all I was making, and I started thinking that If this keeps up, “KOTOHA YOKOZAWA” will become defined solely by this one item.

Of course, I’m happy that it became my signature piece, but I didn’t start the brand just to make that one item.
I wanted to express not just the clothing, but also the styling, people’s demeanor, and even the mood of the moment, so I decided to split the line.

At the same time, I believed that our ability to create and deliver items quickly was one of our strengths.
I didn’t want to lose that momentum, so I launched “TODO KOTOHAYOKOZAWA” as a line dedicated to lettuce-edged and pleated items.
The name "TODO" comes from ‘To Do List’.
It embodies my desire to continue that style: creating something as soon as the idea strikes and delivering it right away.

We started “SOME BODY KOTOHAYOKOZAWA” to create a space where we could continue the kind of expression only possible with one-of-a-kind pieces like our early days.
Once we move to mass production, it becomes difficult to preserve the approach and sensibility of a single piece. We wanted to maintain an environment where we could do just that.
Sometimes, looking back at pieces we created on a whim, we think, “This shape was really great—let’s incorporate it into the next season’s collection”.

It also becomes a space where new staff members can show their unique ideas and sensibilities by creating one-of-a-kind pieces.
I believe that experiencing the process of seeing the items they’ve made displayed in-store and chosen by customers changes their mindset toward craftsmanship, and it also provides our brand with new perspectives.

Recently, I’ve also been making knits using only leftover yarn from lettuce-edge projects and re-dyeing pieces from our archives.
I’ve always felt strongly about not wasting things.
I don’t really understand why people throw away things that are still usable just to buy new ones.
When we re-dyed items from our archives, the heat treatment created wrinkles, giving them a completely different look from when they were first made.
I found that really interesting. Realizing, “I couldn’t have come up with this idea from the start, but I really like this vibe”, has influenced my subsequent creative work.

-There were pieces with photos of food printed on the tags. At first glance, these motifs don’t seem to have anything to do with clothing. What kind of thinking or inspiration leads to such creations?

I believe that if I print anything on fabric, it becomes clothing.
On the other hand, when I try to design a pattern specifically to turn it into clothing, it feels a little contrived.
That’s why I prefer using things that weren’t originally intended for that purpose.
I can use them however I like, and interpret them however I like. That freedom is more comfortable, isn’t it?
So, I almost always look for motifs in my camera roll.
I don’t set out to take photos for a specific purpose. I just naturally snap pictures of things in my daily life that I want to hold.
It could be someone’s outfit, a view I happen to see while walking down the street, or something I think, “Maybe other people wouldn’t take a picture of this, but I want to keep it”.
Those kinds of photos often end up being reflected directly in the clothes.
