FETICO

-Over the course of your long career in design, are there ever times when you just can’t seem to find inspiration?
How do you approach those moments?

That doesn’t happen very often these days.
Of course, there are times when I can’t immediately find a theme, but I’m always thinking separately about the materials I want to use and what I want to create with them.
From there, I can work backwards and build a mood around those ideas, deciding, “Let’s go for this kind of mood”.
So I rarely find myself at a complete standstill.
There’s always something to work on, and I’m constantly thinking about how to bring everything together.

I’ve also come to feel that I need to be able to create even when I don’t have inspiration.
This is work that I’ll be doing for decades, and not every brand creates each collection around a specific theme.
This approach works for us right now, but I believe it’s fine to let things naturally take shape depending on where we are at any given moment.

-When you find yourself unsure while working on a design, what ultimately guides your decisions?

One factor is whether I would want to wear it myself.
Of course, there are some designs I couldn’t wear myself, but I still place great importance on whether I would look at someone wearing them and think, “That looks wonderful”.

Ultimately, I base my decisions on whether the garment can make someone look attractive and whether it moves me personally.

-As you’ve continued your design work, are there any values or sensibilities you’ve let go of?

I don’t follow trends as much as I used to.

When I was working as a designer for a company, I was somewhat conscious of trends, but now I feel there’s no point in playing catch-up.
I place great importance on trusting our own instincts to create new collections. As a result, our sensibilities may occasionally align with those of other designers, but that’s never something we intentionally seek out.

-Since launching your brand, what has changed the most for you personally?

The biggest change has been the increased freedom I now have.

On the other hand, I’ve come to take responsibility for every decision and action I make.
Freedom and responsibility may seem like opposites, but I feel both very strongly.

-During working in the fashion industry for so many years, have you ever felt like giving up?

I’ve never once thought about quitting.

Becoming a designer had been my dream since I was a student, so I was simply happy to have that dream come true and be able to do what I love for a living.
Of course, there were plenty of difficult things, like low pay and not having many days off. But even so, I genuinely enjoyed the work itself.

I do get discouraged sometimes, but whenever that happens, I try to go back to what made me start in the first place: the fact that I’m able to make a living doing something I love.

-Fashion reflects the times, and is there anything in particular you want to express right now?

My desire to portray a woman who freely chooses her own style and dresses in a way that’s true to herself—a vision I had when I first started the brand—hasn’t changed.
Back then, there was still a sense that women in Japan and across Asia were somewhat constrained, and I hoped to gradually change that consciousness through fashion.

Now that the brand is entering its sixth year, I want to share that vision with a wider range of generations.
I will continue expressing an image of a woman who is free and strong in her own way.

-Please tell us what you hope to carry forward and what new challenges you’d like to take on.

By continuing to produce primarily in Japan, we’ve been able to build close, face-to-face relationships with the people at our factories.
I’ll keep valuing the relationships we have today—being able to create alongside people who understand our brand and look forward to each new collection.

On the other hand, a new challenge I’d like to take on is opening our own store.
This has been a long-standing goal of ours, and we’ve started taking small steps toward making it a reality, while thinking about what we need to make it happen.
