“VIVIANO” is a Tokyo-based fashion brand founded in 2016 by Viviano Sue, a designer raised in the United States.Freely blending contrasting elements—from femininity and masculinity to delicacy and boldness—the brand continues to create garments unconstrained by conventional boundaries.

In this interview on Lula Japan Web, we discuss the history and future prospects of “VIVIANO”.

VIVIANO

-For "VIVIANO", how do you balance creation with making clothes that can actually be worn?

I think ready-to-wear is incredibly challenging.
With couture, many people may never actually have the chance to wear it, and it can also be enjoyed simply as something to look at.
But when it comes to ready-to-wear, customers are actually spending their own money to buy the clothes.
That’s exactly why we have to take it seriously.

Having run the brand for 10 years, I’ve really come to understand the importance of the business side.
Without neglecting that aspect, I try to create clothes that people will actually wear while still bringing a strong sense of creativity to them.

I’ve never once thought of fashion as art.

Clothes are clothes, so I think it’s important that they can actually be worn.
No matter how unconventional a piece may be, you should still be able to put it on and move around in it.
Depending on the fabric, it might be a little heavy, but even so, it still works as a piece of clothing.
That’s something I’ve always valued.

-As society undergoes major changes, are there any kinds of clothes you feel particularly drawn to creating right now, or values you want to continue upholding?

“VIVIANO” creates both couture-style pieces and ready-to-wear, and I want to continue valuing both.
These days, there’s a growing tendency to reduce costs by simplifying specifications and cutting back on production processes.
However, we do not wish to compromise on those aspects.

I think the reason vintage pieces from decades ago can still look beautiful today is that they were made properly in the first place.
That’s why I want “VIVIANO”’s clothes to still look beautiful 10 years from now.
We place great importance on making each piece carefully, from the way it is constructed to the details on the inside of the garment.

At the same time, the climate is changing dramatically.
Summers are getting longer, and demand for the heavier autumn and winter clothes we used to wear is changing as well, so we need to adjust our product mix accordingly.
Even when we create something a little unusual or highly design-driven, I still want it to be comfortable when someone actually wears it. Recently, we’ve been consciously incorporating technical fabrics with breathability and cooling properties.
Sometimes we use machine-washable materials as well. I want to keep exploring what it means to create clothes that people can genuinely wear in the climate we live in today.

-I hear that you no longer create mood boards and instead develop your collections through ongoing conversations. Could you tell us how you came to adopt this approach?

I feel that if I decide on a mood board right from the start, the whole process can end up becoming about trying to get closer to what I’ve already decided.

By not setting everything in stone from the beginning and allowing the process to remain fluid, something even better can emerge along the way.
I take those discoveries into the collection, and that’s how it ultimately comes together.
Lately, I’ve been finding this way of working really interesting.

-As you develop women’s and men’s collections in parallel, what is the significance of deliberately approaching each from a different perspective?

What prompted me to start the men’s line was including male models in the women’s shows.
After doing that for about two seasons, I began to feel there were limits to what I could do that way.

I don’t really think in terms of ‘unisex’ when I’m creating clothes.
Whilst I beleave people should be free to choose and wear whichever clothes they like, when it comes to making the clothes themselves, the shapes of our bodies are different. The shoulders, chest, waist, hips—the proportions and curves are all different.
If we try to make something that works equally well for both, we inevitably run into limitations.
So I decided it would be better to separate women’s and men’s from the very beginning and design each one from scratch.

Once I actually separated them, I found that it gave me much more clarity.
By considering about each body on its own terms, I’ve been able to create more beautiful clothes.
Of course, who wears the finished clothes is completely up to them.
Some women buy pieces from the men’s collection, and vice versa.
That’s not a problem at all; I simply approach them separately when I’m designing.

-Please tell us about the reasons behind your decision to temporarily suspend the shows in Tokyo, which you’ve been holding for six consecutive seasons.

We started doing PR overseas about a year ago, and I feel like our reach has gradually been expanding. I’ve also had more opportunities to propose custom pieces, and I’ve even been able to offer them to people like Madonna and Lady Gaga—people I could only have dreamed of working with.

And next year, I’d like to hold an exhibition in Paris.
To do that, I need to revisit our production schedule and get everything into place.

This time, we were able to complete the women’s collection about a month earlier than usual, but next time, we’ll need to move even faster.
Taking all of that into account, we decided it would be better to take a break from the shows for now.

We’ve held shows in Tokyo for six consecutive seasons, and it feels like we’ve been running nonstop the whole time.
I was also becoming concerned that doing shows might gradually turn into a routine.
Once I decide to hold a show, I inevitably start thinking about creating a collection for the runway.
So I wanted to step away from that for a while and try creating a collection in another way.
In fact, by thinking about this collection in terms of individual looks, I was able to create something different again.

There are also things we can do precisely because we’re not doing a show.
I’d like to continue choosing the form of presentation that feels best for the brand at any given time.
Of course, I love fashion shows themselves, and there’s always the possibility that we’ll start doing them again.

-As the brand enters its next phase, with plans for an exhibition in Paris and an expanding presence overseas, what are some of the challenges you’d like to take on and the dreams you hope to realize?

I’d love to put on a show in Paris someday.
However given the way the global landscape is changing, I also find myself wondering whether putting on a show is really the only thing that matters.
There may be other ways of doing things, and that’s something I’d like to continue exploring.
As the brand grows, I hope to keep creating and sharing things that stay with people, in whatever way feels right at that particular moment.

I’d also love to work with people I’ve admired for a long time.
I’d be thrilled to create custom pieces for people I’ve always loved, like Beyoncé and Lady Gaga.
Through our international PR efforts, we’re gradually beginning to have opportunities to get our clothes to people I grew up watching.

I don’t believe a brand is just about making beautiful clothes.
Fashion has given me so much joy and excitement, and because of that, I value the opportunity to excite and delight others through my designs.
I aim to to keep sharing things that can bring people those kinds of feelings.
