「コロナ禍に喜びを」人々を笑顔にする2万本のヒマワリが美しい

米ウィスコンシン州のケノーシャ郡にある「トンプソン・ストロベリー・ファーム」は、例年なら夏にはイチゴ狩りを、秋にはラズベリーやカボチャの収穫体験を開催している農園。

しかし、パンデミックという非常事態に直面した今年、辛い状況下にある人々に少しでも喜びを感じてほしいと考えた経営者のスコット・トンプソンさんは、奥さんが出してくれたアイディアを採用し、大量のヒマワリを植えることを決めたそう。

その数、実に2万本超！

近隣の大都市であるシカゴやミルウォーキーからも来場者が来ることを想定していたスコットさんは、“ヒマワリ畑の中を歩くなら、自然にソーシャルディスタンスが保てるはずだ”と考えたそうで、「少しの間でも現実を忘れてもらえれば」と＜USAトゥデイ＞に語っています。

準備の際には5週間以上かけて、およそ8万9,000平方メートルの敷地に種を蒔いていったというスコットさん。最初から2万本植えようと思っていたわけではなく、結果的にその数に達したそう。

通常ヒマワリは10日～14日ほどでしおれるそうですが、スコットさんの農園では次から次へと新しい花が開花しているため、9月末までか、それ以上の期間楽しめる見込みとのこと。

＜GOOD NEWS NETWORK＞によると、農園への入場料は車1台につき25ドル（約2,600円）で、希望者は花をカットして持ち帰ることもできるそう。また、来場者たちが写真を撮影しやすいよう、あえて背丈が低い品種を植えたのだとか。
