検索数が313%上昇！米辞典が選んだ今年の言葉は「They」

年末になると話題になる、「今年の流行語」や「今年の漢字」。年の瀬に一年を振り返るのは日本だけでなく、アメリカでも先日、150年以上の歴史を持つ有名な辞典メリアム・ウェブスターが「今年の言葉」を発表したばかり。2018年の「Justice（正義）」に続き、2019年に選ばれたのは「they」という言葉。

これまで一般的には、三人称複数の人称代名詞として使われてきた「they（彼ら）」という言葉。ところが近年になって、特定の性別には分類されない第三の性「ノンバイナリー（性が混在する人や、変化する人、そして男性・女性のどちらでもない人など）」の人々が「he（彼）」や「she（彼女）」の代わりとして使う、ジェンダーニュートラルな言葉として浸透している。

ネット版の「メリアム・ウェブスター」によれば、この単語の検索数は昨年に比べ313%も上昇。辞典にも一人称としての「they」を今年9月に追加したばかりだそう。

今年9月には、人気歌手のサム・スミスが自身の話をするときには「they」や「them」を使ってほしいと訴えたことや、レディー・ガガが「相手がどんな代名詞で呼ばれたいかを確認すべき」という考えを発信したことも記憶に新しい。

また、アメリカ心理学会も「相手の性別が分からない場合や、個人が『they』を好む場合は、正式な文書であっても『they』を使用すべき」だと発表したことも話題に。

Today is a good day so here goes. I’ve decided I am changing my pronouns to THEY/THEM ❤ after a lifetime of being at war with my gender I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out. I’m so excited and privileged to be surrounded by people that support me in this decision but I’ve been very nervous about announcing this because I care too much about what people think but fuck it! 「生きてきた間ずっと、自分のジェンダーと闘ってきた。けれど、外見と内面その両面から自分自身を祝福することにした」「きっと、今後も私のジェンダーを間違えてしまう人はいると思います。でも、努力をしてほしいんです」と綴ったサム・スミス。

多様性について理解の進む現代らしい使い方…と思いきや、 メリアム・ウェブスターによれば実は600年以上も前から「they」は一人称として使用されてきた歴史があるという。

また、同辞典では2019年に注目された言葉として他にも10のフレーズをリストアップ。多くは政治関係の言葉や時事問題に関わる単語だったけれど、中には小説のタイトルとなった単語も選ばれている。

また、シンプルな「the」が6位にランクイン！ その理由はオハイオ州立大学（The Ohio State University）が、大学名につく「The」を米国特許商標局に商標出願したからだとか。登録は却下されてしまったようだけれど、同辞典での検索数が500%も上昇したという。
